The Water Industry Registration Scheme is for contractors who provide new connections to the existing water supply or sewerage system. These are referred to as “self-lay” organisations or SLOs.
Lloyds Register operate the Water Industry Registration Scheme (WIRS) on behalf of water utility companies and are one of the world’s leading providers of professional services for engineering and technology – improving safety and increasing the performance of critical infrastructures worldwide.
In order to be WIRS accredited, the companies undergo technical assessments from Lloyd’s Register. We assess several areas, including design, construction, connections, commissioning and project management. By becoming WIRS accredited, companies don’t need to be approved by 22 separate water companies.
A WIRS accredited self-lay organisation may perform works on the connection of water mains and supplies to a property, dependent on the status and scope of accreditation.
